Great Glen Way

Stretching from coast to coast the Great Glen is a wonderful geographical feature through the Highlands of Scotland.

Running 73 miles between Fort William and Inverness, the way passes through urban environments as well as heather moorland and low level canal and loch side trails.

On this trip we walk from North to South walking towards the magnificent views of Ben Nevis and Lochaber.

Starting in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, we follow the Caledonian Canal for a short distance before heading up into the hill side of Loch Ness with great views down its length.

We keep high for a couple of days before walking again along the canal and the shores of Loch Oich and Loch Lochy before arriving at Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis. This walk is an ideal introduction to long distance routes.

This walk is guided by a qualified mountain leader who can provide you with a relaxing and informative experience.

Day One: Inverness to Drumnadrochit 18 miles 540m ascent

This day we walk along the canal before ascending up to views over Loch Ness, through the settlement of Blackfold and the Abriachan Forest before descending into Drumnadrochit and views to famous Urquhart Castle.

Day Two: Drumnadrochit to Invermoriston 14 miles 330m ascent

Walking up to some wonderful views of Loch Ness before descending to Altsigh then up to another view point before arriving down in Invermoriston.

From Invermoriston we take the forest paths which undulate towards Fort Augustus. Arrival in the village with time to relax by the canal or to go on a Loch Ness cruise.

Day Four: Fort Augustus to South Laggan 10 miles 40m ascent

The way now follows the Caledonian canal to Aberchalder and then on the south side of Loch Oich before following the canal again towards the hostel.
